The Effingham Local History Group’s publication series The Bulletin – edited by Bryan R. Sherwood – appears in two editions each year, in March and September, and printed copies are supplied only to ELHG members. The first edition was in September 2012. It presents short articles about Effingham’s history from various contributors.
The Bulletin is also available on open shelves at the Surrey History Centre in Woking for consultation by the public; the Centre’s reference to this holding is J/616.
Our first book Studies in Local History: Effingham Common – edited by Susan W. Morris, Christopher John Hogger and Bryan R. Sherwood – was printed by The Blissett Group, London in September 2011. It has nine chapters spanning 104 pages with 49 illustrations.
Our second book Effingham in Wartime: the Book of the Exhibition – edited by Christopher John Hogger, Susan W. Morris and Bryan R. Sherwood – was printed by The Blissett Group, London in May 2012. It presents all the material shown on the display panels at the Effingham in Wartime exhibition held in October 2011. A slightly revised and corrected version was printed in 2016.
Our third book Effingham – A History in Photographs (First Edition) – edited by Christopher John Hogger, Susan W. Morris and Bryan R. Sherwood – was printed by The Blissett Group, London in 2012. Dedicated to the village’s late local historian Mary A. Rice-Oxley, it presents 200 photographs of Effingham people, events and properties, each with its own narrative. In 2015 we published a 2nd edition of this book – see below.
Our fourth book John Hassell’s Watercolours of Effingham Surrey – written by Vivien White – was printed by The Blissett Group, London in 2013. It describes several Effingham properties painted in the early 19th century by John Hassell and compares them with their present-day structure and appearance.
Our fifth book Effingham – A History in Photographs (Second Edition) – edited by Christopher John Hogger, Susan W. Morris and Bryan R. Sherwood – was printed by The Blissett Group, London in 2015 and reprinted in 2021. It updates the narratives for about fifty of the photographs presented in the First Edition.
Since original publication, further research has helped us develop what we know of many aspects of Effingham’s history, including the background to some of the images in this book. The pdf attached here captures the updated information as we currently know it. We warmly welcome further information and/or corrections. Identifications of people in the group photos would be especially pleasing. Please contact us at email@example.com.
Our sixth book Edwardian Effingham – edited by Christopher John Hogger and Susan W. Morris and compiled by Alexander Eller with cover design by Bryan R. Sherwood – was printed by Surrey Litho Ltd, Great Bookham in 2016. It presents all the material shown on the display panels at the Edwardian Effingham exhibition held in April 2013.
