The renowned railway contractor George Craig Saunders Pauling purchased The Lodge in Effingham in 1897 and became a notable figure in the local community. He was a staunch Catholic and brought about the building of Our Lady of Sorrows. It was natural that he and family members should be buried there and this article discusses their graves and inscriptions.
