SILVER JUBILEE CELEBRATION 1935

Effingham’s celebration of the Silver Jubilee of King George V in 1935 was perhaps the the largest community event to have taken place in the village since the Peace Celebrations of 1919. It is fortunate that there survive many sources attesting to the impressive array of activities staged for the day, including the original Programme, photographs, school records, Parish Council records, newspaper reports and personal testimonies, all brought together in this article.
The day’s events in London are presented to good effect in the following British Pathé film from YouTube. It has the voice-over of the King’s public address, although the sound quality leaves something to be desired.
