AFRICA IN LONDON

GEORGE PAULING’S EXTRAVAGANZA OF 1899

Original text written by the late George Craig Saunders Pauling; added commentary by Christopher John Hogger and Michael Edward Agius.

In the posthumously-published autobiography ‘The Chronicles of a Contractor’ by George Craig Saunders Pauling, Chapter 50 bears the title ‘Africa in London’. This relates how he and others staged a long-running show ‘Savage South Africa’ in London, its participants including a large number of Africans brought from South Africa for this purpose. Pauling’s chapter, describing how the show came into being and how it fared, is reproduced verbatim at the start of this article. The remainder of the article is a commentary providing more detail and insights about the event and in this the reader will encounter quoted material, especially from newspapers, employing language that would today be deplored for its racist nature.
