Christina MacCarthy was the Matron at The Lodge in Effingham in the 1960s and 1970s. She and her staff, including a number of nurses, were employed by Surrey County Council – the owners of The Lodge – to look after approximately forty women patients there, most of them elderly and some of them epileptic. This article presents what is known of Christina’s time there, much of it drawn from accounts in local newspapers.
