The Lambert family and friends at Effingham House in 1896.

Welcome to the website of Effingham Local History Group (ELHG). Our village of Effingham in Surrey has a long and fascinating history – events that have taken place here and the characters involved in them become ever more astonishing the more we learn about them.

We hope you will enjoy the content we have made available here and that you will contact us if you think you can assist our research or other activities.

Anyone wishing to become a member of the Group and to take part in its activities is welcome to apply. To do this please contact the Secretary.

Membership entitles you not only to attend our meetings but to have access to our extensive archives. You will also receive copies of our publication The Bulletin which is produced twice each year.

We meet once each month (except in August) to review projects, to exchange news, to present slideshows and to share an enjoyable evening. Agendas are distributed in advance.
Currently our ordinary monthly meetings are held in the Methodist Church, but our Annual General Meeting each May is held elsewhere.

Discover our Interests

Our Discovery page has links to many aspects of our research, including studies of Effingham’s past people, places, organisations and businesses. These resources form only a small part of our entire archives most of which are currently stored offline.

We request that visitors to this website respect the fact that ELHG asserts and protects its copyright over the material presented here.
